Butrint ( Albanian : Butrint or Butrint, Ancient Greek : Butrint , Latin : Buthrotum) is an archaeological site and ancient Greek city in Albania , about 20 km south of Saranda on a hill overlooking the canal Candia . Katoikimeno since prehistoric times , Butrint has been established Greek colony and later Roman, and also Christian bishopric . After a period under Byzantine administration and brief occupation by the Venetians , the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages because of low and moist soil . Today’s archaeological site is a place of World Heritage of UNESCO.

Saranda ( alv. Saranda) is a coastal city in Albania Northern Epirus , opposite Corfu. city is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Onchismou that flourished in Roman times as it was a trading post for trade between continents and Italy. It was destroyed in 552 AD after repeated invasions of the Goths .

The current name comes from the Byzantine church of the Forty Saints , whose ruins are preserved on the hill above the town . The church , Byzantine times , has two rows of columns inside the arches and all along the sides. In the precincts of the temple is said that there were 40 churches , one for each control of Sebastia . The main temple is described by historians as the Byzantine style with two rows and columns inside arches on each side.

The modern city was founded in the Ottoman era . During the Balkan wars , the Greek army occupied the city on 18 February 1913 and quit in December 1916 .

The port city was the stronghold of the Italians , and in 1939 landed there and took all Albania . During the Greco-Italian war that followed , the Greek army occupied again for a short time on December 6, 1940 , before he could leave because of the German invasion.

Today there is still a Greek community in the city , though smaller. Of course , continue to operate the Greek schools , and churches .
